Informations before surgery
Check list:
- Buy Paracetemol 500 mg and Ibuprofen 200 mg. You can buy these at the pharmacy or in a supermarket. You will need these when you go home after surgery
- Six hours before surgery you may not eat, but only drink water
- Two hours before surgery you are not allowed to drink anything
- The night before surgery or in the morning you must shower and wash your hair
- You must shave your armpit three days before surgery
- You can not use body lotion or deodorant after your shower
- You can not wear makeup, nail polish, jewelry or piercings
You need to bring:
- Your own medication in its original packing
- Bathrobe or something similar
- Slippers or something similar
- A good fitting bra
- Toiletries
Admission
The day before surgery a nurse from the ward will call you between
14.00 – 15.00 o`clock. The nurse will inform you about the time for admission. If your surgery is on a Monday, the nurse will call you Friday.
You can find our ward at entrance 3, 1st floor.
After your surgery
After surgery you will stay shortly in the recovery room before returning to the ward. Back at the ward we will make sure everything is fine after the surgery and you can eat and drink again.
Pain
It is normal to experience pain and soreness after surgery. The nurse will guide you about the use of painkillers.
Discharge
After a few hours of observation, you will be discharged in the afternoon or early evening.
You need to make arrangement for a relative to take you home after surgery.
Possible complications after surgery
- Hematoma. In rare cases patients can experience hematoma after surgery, and in a few cases these patients will need a short surgery to stop the bleeding.
- Infection. Signs of infection are swelling, redness, pain and fever.
Known consequences of the surgery
- Fluid. Some patients may experience the formation of fluid behind the scar, also called seroma. This can feel uncomfortable, it is however harmless and is a natural part of the healing process. Some will need aspiration to remove the fluid. This is done by a nurse in Outpatient Department after appointment.
Some experience a changed sensitivity in the breast, armpit or upper arm after the surgery. It can vary due to type of surgery and from day to day. It can feel like a numbness, itching, pins and needles.
