Based on animal studies and cross-sectional human studies, the gut microbiota has been designated as an important metabolic regulator. But is it really that important for postprandial glucose metabolism in humans? In our latest interventional study, we find no clinically relevant indications that postprandial physiology is affected by a broad-spectrum antibiotics course (aiming at eradication of gut bacteria) in a group of healthy volunteers.
